Thoughts From The Underground Railroad
May 16, 19 youth and adults ventured to Camp Iduhapi, a YMCA camp to experience what life was like being a slave, and experience what risks were involved in seeking to escape to freedom via the underground railroad. Participants learned about Uncle Tom's cabin, Harriet Tubman, Quakers and the politics of the day. Here are some comments from this year's participants:
“The experience truly made me feel like I was a slave escaping from the south.”
“The sounds of dogs barking and people chasing me forced me to run for my life!”
“Until this experience, I never really had an appreciation for the difficulties involved in being a black person or a minority. The event increased my sensitivity to how I prejudge other people.”
"I can't believe how real the experience was. I never dreamed that I'd have to walk through a swamp to obtain freedom."
"Doing this event reinforced what I learned in school and put it all together for me."
