How Is It With Your Soul?

This is a question John Wesley (founder of Methodism) encouraged his followers to ask one another. He wanted people to know each other beyond the casualness of weather and health and connect at a deeper level. At Minnehaha we have a number of small/soul groups that encourage people to come together for study and personal connections. You are welcomed and encouraged to join these groups at any time. Read on for a list of active groups.

Minnehaha's Green Team

Did you know Minnehaha has a Green Team? Do you know what a Green Team is? At one of our first meetings we decided our purpose is to: Create awareness of environmental concerns that will lead to action individual, group and institutional. Integrate ideas and education into all facets of congregational life. Were still working on the details of exactly how to accomplish that.

Our work and direction has been impacted by the fact that we applied for and received a $5,000 Community POWER (Partners on Waste Education and Reduction) Grant (funded by Hennepin County in partnership with the Solid Waste Management Coordinating Board). Our project the Pick One Thing campaign will provide an opportunity for everyone to be involved. Youll be hearing the details in the very near future.

Taize Worship

Spend a brief hour and renew your spirit with a service of music and meditation. Taizé Worship, based on the teachings of Brother Roger from Taizé France, uses music with simple melody lines and periods of silence to quiet the soul and renew the spirit. There is no sermon, just a brief reading and a few questions to consider.

The sanctuary is set with candles and images of various Christian faiths. Music is led by Barbara Hays and often includes string instruments and a cantor. Join us at 7pm on the second Friday of each month, September through May, and partake of this moving worship opportunity.

Affordable Housing Grant

Minnehaha Receives Second Grant For Affordable Housing Project! We have been awarded a $5,000 national Peace With Justice Grant in addition to the $2,000 state grant we received earlier this year. Both grants are in support of the Deep Roots, New Branches Initiative. We can apply for both of these grants annually.

Neighborhood Food Distribution

On March 22 Minnehahas food distribution program was featured on Fox Channel 9 news in a report by Dawn Mitchell Fighting Hunger on Easter.

Affordable Housing Success!

Planning Commission Recommends Our Housing Proposal!
The Community Development Committee of the City of Minneapolis voted on January 8 to recommend the Deep Roots, New Branches development proposal from Minnehaha UMC and Lake Nokomis Lutheran, Plymouth Foundation and Common Bond, to the full City Council for approval! This is great news, and pending a positive vote of the City Council on January 18, our work will just be getting underway to build a mixed use housing project at 54th Street and Hiawatha Avenue.

Blessed To Meet Growing Food Demand
It seems inconceivable that the need for supplemental food continues to grow in our little neighborhood every single month, but it does. With God's grace and blessing we received enough food and (just barely enough) funding to meet the need in 2007.
The Food Shelf served nearly 125,000 pounds of food to 500 households in 2007 touching the lives of over 1400 Children, adults, and seniors. The monthly MinneHarvest reached approximately 150 households per month servicing some 200 adults and untold children with groceries and other items. Our operation got so large we spun off the "RichHarvest" at Richfield United Methodist Church and they now serve almost as many people as we do on the fourth Saturday of each month.
These amazing ministries would not be possible were it not for the blessings of our Lord and the support of our congregation. To volunteer, or to make a donation, contact the church office.

Congregate Dinning for Seniors

Volunteers of America Senior Dining Program serves hot noon meals Monday through Friday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1720 E. Minnehaha Parkway. These delicious, balanced, nutritional meals are offered to people age 60 and older for just $3 per day. Please make reservations three days in advance. Eat with friends, save on cooking what could be better! Call 612/729-6668 to make reservations.

Do We Need Affordable Housing?

YES! Many of our neighbors could not afford to purchase their homes in our corner of the city and if conscious efforts are not made, their will be very limited opportunities for working families and seniors to access the housing market.
