A Mid Summer Discussion With Cooper Wiggen
Reimagining Church, Faith And God
Wednesday, July 16, 6-8pm Refreshments (and childcare) Provided Gain an understanding of a dramatic shift in how church is learning to understand itself, faith, the earth and God from an emerging wisdom and trans-global perspective. John Shelby Spong and Elizabeth Johnson are the primary writers to be discussed plus: Borg, Zoelle, Fox, McFague, Ruiz, Thurman, Chodron, Tolle, Wilbur. Participants are encouraged to read 4 (relatively short) chapters to prepare for the discussion. Materials are available in the church office.

Youth On The Underground Railroad

Thoughts From The Underground Railroad
May 16, 19 youth and adults ventured to Camp Iduhapi, a YMCA camp to experience what life was like being a slave, and experience what risks were involved in seeking to escape to freedom via the underground railroad. Participants learned about Uncle Tom's cabin, Harriet Tubman, Quakers and the politics of the day. Here are some comments from this year's participants:
The experience truly made me feel like I was a slave escaping from the south.
The sounds of dogs barking and people chasing me forced me to run for my life!
Until this experience, I never really had an appreciation for the difficulties involved in being a black person or a minority. The event increased my sensitivity to how I prejudge other people.
"I can't believe how real the experience was. I never dreamed that I'd have to walk through a swamp to obtain freedom."
"Doing this event reinforced what I learned in school and put it all together for me."

Building Commitee Buzz

The Church Conference June 25, 2008, included the presentation of the Building Committees findings, recommendations and a motion for the continuation of the planning process.

The work of the Building committee has included over 300 interactions of Minnehaha members and friends to discern what is important to our congregation. The overwhelming outcome: Minnehaha is a Nurturing, Serving and Transforming environment. Now we need to make certain that our facility is prepared to support our missions and ministries.

The motion, which passed unanimously read as follows:

Approve development of an assessment and design study based on building recommendations as described in the Building Committee Summary Report to the Church Council using the consulting services of Cermak Rhoades at an estimated cost of $25,000 and projected completion by October 1, 2008.

Affordable Housing Grant

Minnehaha Receives Second Grant For Affordable Housing Project! We have been awarded a $5,000 national Peace With Justice Grant in addition to the $2,000 state grant we received earlier this year. Both grants are in support of the Deep Roots, New Branches Initiative. We can apply for both of these grants annually.

Neighborhood Food Distribution

On March 22 Minnehahas food distribution program was featured on Fox Channel 9 news in a report by Dawn Mitchell Fighting Hunger on Easter.

Affordable Housing Success!

Planning Commission Recommends Our Housing Proposal!
The Community Development Committee of the City of Minneapolis voted on January 8 to recommend the Deep Roots, New Branches development proposal from Minnehaha UMC and Lake Nokomis Lutheran, Plymouth Foundation and Common Bond, to the full City Council for approval! This is great news, and pending a positive vote of the City Council on January 18, our work will just be getting underway to build a mixed use housing project at 54th Street and Hiawatha Avenue.

Food Programs

Blessed To Meet Growing Food Demand
It seems inconceivable that the need for supplemental food continues to grow in our little neighborhood every single month, but it does. With God's grace and blessing we received enough food and (just barely enough) funding to meet the need in 2007.
The Food Shelf served nearly 125,000 pounds of food to 500 households in 2007 touching the lives of over 1400 Children, adults, and seniors. The monthly MinneHarvest reached approximately 150 households per month servicing some 200 adults and untold children with groceries and other items. Our operation got so large we spun off the "RichHarvest" at Richfield United Methodist Church and they now serve almost as many people as we do on the fourth Saturday of each month.
These amazing ministries would not be possible were it not for the blessings of our Lord and the support of our congregation. To volunteer, or to make a donation, contact the church office.
